Navigating Faith and Politics : My Journey Beyond Religious Boundaries

During his presidency, Donald Trump’s policies often seemed at odds with the teachings I hold dear. For instance, when it comes to immigration, the Bible repeatedly emphasizes hospitality and compassion towards strangers. Leviticus 19:34 states, “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt.” This contrasts sharply with policies that prioritized exclusion over compassion.

Moreover, Trump’s economic policies, while beneficial to some, appeared to exacerbate inequalities—a concern deeply rooted in my commitment to justice and fairness. Proverbs 22:16 reminds us, “One who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and one who gives gifts to the rich—both come to poverty.” This challenges any policies that widen the wealth gap without consideration for the vulnerable.

In addition to policy, Trump’s leadership style often contradicted biblical teachings on humility and respect. Proverbs 29:23 advises, “Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor.” Trump’s often divisive rhetoric and lack of civility seemed to defy this wisdom, which encourages humility and respect in all interactions.

Reflecting on these aspects, I’ve wrestled with how fellow believers reconcile their support for Trump with these biblical teachings. For me, faith extends beyond political alliances; it’s about living out values of love, compassion, and justice in all aspects of life. It’s about choosing leaders and policies that reflect these values and contribute to a more humane and equitable society.

In essence, my faith journey compels me to evaluate political candidates and policies through a spiritual lens, guided by biblical principles that prioritize empathy, justice, and the inherent dignity of every person. As I navigate the complexities of politics, my faith in God directs me toward paths that promote compassion, inclusivity, and fairness for all—recognizing that true faith transcends political affiliations and challenges us to uphold moral integrity in all circumstances.
